Course Description


This course provides an introduction to an emerging renewable bioenergy technology, microbial fuel cell (MFC).  Topics include stoichiometry and energetics of MFC, evaluation of MFC performance, design and operation of MFCs, and microbial electrolysis for biohydrogen production.  A lab section is arranged for the students to make small air-cathode MFCs by themselves.

Course Objectives


The student, upon completion of this course, should be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of MFC
  • Identify the potential applications of MFC technology
  • Identify the parameters for MFC evaluation
  • Understand the requirements of the design and operation of MFCs
  • Make a simple air-cathode MFC
  • Write and present a proposal related to MFC technology
