Computing Support

The goal of computing support within the Biological and Ecological Engineering Department is to provide robust access to computing resources within the department and across campus. Computing resources are provide at three levels: 1) within the department, 2) at the College of Engineering (click here), and 3) through OSU computing support (click here).

If you are having problems with your computer or network connection, You should look through the frequently asked questions below. If you don't see the answer to your problem, you can contact support here.

Departmental Computing Support


Computer Setup for ALL BEE Computers

Any computer that is connected to the departmental network are required to conform to certain standards. These standards reflect needs for security, access, and ANY COMPUTER THAT DOES NOT CONFORM TO THESE STANDARDS WILL BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE NETWORK.

  • You must have the BEE Network Administrator set up your machine
  • You must have an "admin" account on your machine. The Network Admininistrator can set this up.
  • You must have Symantec Antivirus running and configured correctly. The Network Admininistrator can set this up.
  • BEE Student Laptop Printer Setup - printer access for BEE students with laptops.

Accounts
All BEE students are given a computer account that is centrally administrated. It is an ENGR account, which is accessible from any machine on campus, as long as you login to the ENGINEERING domain. Drive Space
When you log on from any NT server on campus to the ENGINEERING domain, you will automatically have a drive mapped (Z:) to a STAK volume on a central ENGR server. This provides you with 1.2GB of space on that server.

Email

Once you set up your account, you will automatically have an email address <login@engr.orst.edu>.  However, you will still need to set up a mail client to access this account. Your account can be accessed using the email web interface, https://webmail.oregonstate.edu then select ENGINEERING from the drop down or go to http://engr.oregonstate.edu/computing/email will give you information on other means of accessing your email.


Your Own Web Page(s)

You can create a web page for yourself on your STAK drive. To do this, see the College of Engineering support pages at http://engr.oregonstate.edu/computing/web


Printing

When you log into the BIOENGINEERING domain from a BEE computer, you will have access to publicly available printers. These are the printers in the BEE computer annex labs.


Installing Software on BEE Lab Computers
You will not be able to install software on a BEE computer without authorization of the BEE network administrator. If you have legitimate need to install legitimate software, contact Bob for permissions and instructions.

Using the BEE Color Printer and Large Format Printer
The Large Format printer can be used for the creation of posters for professional presentations. It is accessible through the "Guest" computer located in 116 Gilmore Hall. Student access to the BEE Color Laser Printer is available if authorized by your faculty advisor. An Authorization Form is available here.

BEE Electronic Mailing Lists
BEE maintains mailing lists for students and faculty. To subscribe yourself to the student list, go to https://secure.engr.oregonstate.edu/mailman/listinfo/bee-grad. YOU MAY ONLY USE AN ONID OR ENGR EMAIL ADDRESS FOR THIS LIST. To send mail to the list of subscribed BRE graduate students, send mail to: bee-grad@ENGR.ORST.EDU.
